The general assumption by many in the public or even those close to us is that people who work at home live a privileged life: no schedule, lots of free time, no pressure. What they do not realize is that working at home is a real job, not just a hobby. Sometimes the people closest to us imply that we should have the house cleaned spotlessly because we are home all day long. When people close to us do not take us seriously, it eventually makes us doubt ourselves, decreases our motivation and wrecks havoc on our productivity.
Every mother or father who works from home at a job or business venture is a working parent. Every mother or father who tends the children and takes care of the house is a working parent. It is a myth that people whose jobs are at home can drop whatever they are doing to go to lunch with a friend, chat on the phone in the middle of the afternoon or entertain friends who arrive unannounced. Just as if you were working outside of the home, you should have a schedule and you should make it clear to friends and family that the schedule does not change unless it is absolutely necessary.
Now if you do not have a schedule, you need to make one in order for you to be in control of your time and be productive. Let people know the hours that you work and the hours you are open to chat or see friends. A schedule also helps confine your work time to a work time so that work does not take over your family life.
Some people even turn off their phone and let voicemail or an answering machine pick up messages. You are at work. The location just happens to be your home. People need to respect that and are more likely to do so if you treat your work-at-home job or business seriously and communicate that to them.
As for husbands or wives who expect housework to be finished when they come home from work, it is important to make it clear that you are working when you are home, not playing video games or eating Bon Bons all day long. Show them the tasks that you do and how long they take to complete. They may have no idea at all about how you spend your day.
For all you know, that spouse may think that after you get home from taking the kids to school in the morning, that you take a coffee break and watch the morning news show until 10 a. M. Then maybe you do an hour or two of work, then take a lunch break after which you relax by reading a book. Then it is time to pick up the kids from school. If that is the idea that your significant other has in his or her head about how you spend your day, it is no wonder he or she expects the housework to be done. Communication is key.
This fairy tail image of your life is not reality. Let people in your life know that you talk to clients, make phone calls, write articles or just exactly what you do all day. Misunderstandings can have a terrible effect on family dynamics. Make sure your communication is clear.
The fact is that the majority of people do not work out of their homes and may not even know anyone who did – prior to meeting you. The great thing is that if you set your boundaries, respect your own business and communicate those clearly, loved ones will follow suit. And, as it stands, more people are moving home to work every day. Soon everyone will know that work at home really work.
